Scott Lloyd Anderson: Snowfolk

Scott has been painting for 24 years after a career as a publication art director. When the digital art was dawning he decided it was time to go full analog and learn to oil paint in the classical style. He learned outdoors and this informs his attention to natural light and the world around us. Traveling around the country working events in the plein air painting circuit was a crucible for training. He’s won some awards, been written about, and sold some paintings along the way.

This exhibit shows a body of work that’s been the result of his love of painting snow and the neighborhood around him. The title is a nod to the gender ambiguity apparent; they’re not all men.

They’re found objects. He didn’t build them, he happened upon them in South Minneapolis. Packable snow is more rare than one might think. There aren’t many opportunities even here in Minnesota and these folks don’t last long. He tapped into feelings of nostalgia in creating them. Family, childhood, and winters that seemed to have tons of snow.

As soon as they’re built, they’re beginning to fade away. Do their expressions express their fleeting time with us?
